Social Security Information
When a loved one passes away, one of the administrative steps that must be taken is notifying the Social Security Administration (SSA). This page provides an overview of the process and the benefits that may be available to surviving family members.
Reporting a Death to Social Security
In most cases, the funeral home reports the death to Social Security on behalf of the family as part of the death certificate filing process. Saddleback Chapel Mortuary handles this notification for every family we serve.
If for any reason the death is not reported through the funeral home, a family member should contact the SSA directly at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY: 1-800-325-0778). The SSA should be notified as soon as possible to avoid overpayments and to initiate any survivor benefits.
Lump-Sum Death Payment
The SSA provides a one-time lump-sum death payment of $255 to an eligible surviving spouse or child. To qualify, the surviving spouse must have been living with the deceased at the time of death, or the surviving spouse or child must have been receiving certain Social Security benefits. This payment must be applied for within two years of the death.
Survivor Benefits
Surviving spouses, children, and in some cases dependent parents may be eligible for monthly Social Security survivor benefits based on the deceased person’s earnings record. Eligibility and amounts depend on the relationship, age, and other factors. Contact the SSA directly to determine what benefits may be available.
What to Have Ready
When contacting Social Security, you will need the following information:
- The deceased person’s Social Security number
- Proof of death (death certificate)
- The surviving spouse’s Social Security number and date of birth
- Marriage certificate (if applying for spouse benefits)
- Dependent children’s Social Security numbers
