Understanding Funeral Pricing
One of the most common concerns families have when planning a funeral or cremation is cost. It is a natural and important question, and you deserve clear, honest answers. At Saddleback Chapel Mortuary in Tustin, CA, we are committed to pricing transparency and will provide a detailed written estimate before any services begin.
This page explains what goes into the cost of funeral and cremation services, what your rights are as a consumer, and how to view our pricing.
Your Right to Transparent Pricing
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Funeral Rule requires all funeral homes to provide a General Price List (GPL) to any person who asks, whether in person, over the phone, or online. The GPL lists the cost of every service and merchandise item the funeral home offers, presented as individual line items so you can compare options and select only the services you need.
Saddleback Chapel Mortuary makes our General Price List available for download on our website. You can view it at any time, before you ever contact us.
What Goes Into the Cost of a Funeral
Funeral and cremation costs are not a single fixed number. The total depends on the services, merchandise, and third-party fees involved. Here is a breakdown of the major cost components:
Professional Services Fee
This fee covers the funeral home’s overhead and the professional services of the funeral director, including consultation, coordination of the service, preparation and filing of necessary paperwork (death certificate, permits, authorizations), and communication with third parties such as cemeteries, clergy, and florists. This fee is typically included in all service packages.
Facility and Staff Fees
These fees cover the use of the funeral home’s facilities (chapel, visitation rooms, reception area) and the staff needed to conduct the services. Costs vary depending on the type and duration of the service.
Transportation
This includes the transfer of the deceased from the place of death to the funeral home, transportation to the cemetery or crematory, and any additional vehicle services (hearse, limousine, flower car). Distances and number of vehicles affect the total.
Merchandise
Caskets, urns, outer burial containers (vault or grave liner), and memorial products are priced separately. There is a wide range of options at every price point. You also have the right under the FTC Funeral Rule to purchase a casket or urn from a third-party provider, and the funeral home cannot charge a handling fee for accepting it.
Third-Party Fees (Cash Advances)
Certain costs are paid by the funeral home on your behalf and then passed through to you at cost. These are sometimes called cash advance items and may include cemetery charges (grave opening/closing, plot purchase), certified copies of the death certificate, clergy honoraria, newspaper obituary fees, flowers, and monument or marker fees. These are not set by the funeral home.
Cremation Fees
If cremation is selected, the crematory fee covers the actual cremation process. Additional costs may include the cremation container (required by law), urn selection, and any services held before or after the cremation.
Ways to Manage Costs
Funeral costs can feel overwhelming, but there are several ways to manage them:
- Select only what you need. The FTC Funeral Rule gives you the right to choose individual services rather than a package. You are not required to purchase any item or service you do not want.
- Pre-plan. Pre-planning allows you to explore options without the time pressure of an immediate need. Pre-funded plans can lock in current pricing.
- Ask about veterans benefits. Eligible veterans may qualify for a VA burial allowance and other benefits that offset costs. Visit our Veterans Benefits page for details.
- Ask about payment options. Saddleback Chapel Mortuary can discuss available payment arrangements with you during the planning process. Payment is expected when arrangements are made.
Frequently Asked Questions About Pricing
How much does a funeral cost in Orange County?
The cost varies widely depending on the type of service, merchandise, and cemetery fees. A direct cremation is the most affordable option. A traditional funeral with burial will be higher. Saddleback Chapel Mortuary provides a written estimate for every family before services begin, so you will know the total cost upfront.
Is cremation less expensive than burial?
In most cases, yes. Cremation eliminates the cost of a burial plot, grave opening and closing, outer burial container, and in some cases the casket. However, the total cost depends on whether you add services such as a viewing, memorial ceremony, or urn. A direct cremation with no service is the most affordable option.
Can I see your prices before making a decision?
Yes. Our General Price List is available for download on our website and is provided to every family during the arrangement process. You are welcome to review pricing before contacting us.
Am I required to purchase a package?
No. Under the FTC Funeral Rule, you have the right to select individual items and services rather than a pre-set package. Saddleback Chapel Mortuary offers both package options and itemized pricing.
Can I bring my own casket or urn?
Yes. The FTC Funeral Rule allows you to purchase a casket, urn, or other merchandise from a third-party provider. Saddleback Chapel Mortuary will not charge a fee for accepting third-party merchandise.
