In Loving Memory of John G. McGill

September 3, 1941 – July 7, 2026

John Gerard McGill, beloved father, grandfather, devoted parishioner, veteran, and longtime State Farm agent, passed away peacefully on July 7, 2026, at the age of 84.

John was born on September 3, 1941, in Glasgow, Scotland, where he spent his childhood and young adult years. He attended primary and secondary schools, as well as college, and began his professional career working for several businesses in Glasgow. In the mid-1960s, he embarked on a new adventure, immigrating to Orange County, California, with his fiancée, Anne Boyle, and her family in pursuit of the American dream.

John and Anne were married in November 1965, beginning a loving partnership that would span nearly four decades until Anne’s passing from cancer in December 2003. Together they built a life centered on faith, family, and service to others.

Shortly after arriving in the United States, John began working for State Farm Insurance as an underwriter. His career was interrupted when he was drafted into the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He faithfully served his country for two years, spending much of his military service stationed at Fort Myer in Arlington, Virginia. Although he did not serve in Vietnam, he answered his nation’s call with dedication and honor.

After completing his military service, John returned to California and resumed his career with State Farm. In 1970, he fulfilled his dream of becoming a State Farm Agent by opening his own agency in Santa Ana. That same year, he and Anne welcomed their first son, Michael, followed three years later by their second son, Stephen.

In 1975, John moved his family to Irvine, where he would reside for the remainder of his life. Five years later, in 1980, he relocated his State Farm agency to the Northwood Town Center in Irvine. For more than three decades, John became a trusted advisor and friend to countless families, earning a reputation for honesty, integrity, and genuine care for those he served. He remained committed to his clients and community until his retirement in 2007.

While John enjoyed a successful professional career, his greatest commitment was to his Catholic faith. He was a founding member of St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Irvine following its establishment in 1978, and he remained an active parishioner for nearly five decades. His quiet dedication to serving the parish touched many lives. Over the years, he faithfully served as a lector, Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, member of the Finance Committee, and coordinator of the parish counters. He gave generously of his time and talents, rarely seeking recognition, believing that service itself was its own reward.

Above all else, John was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle. He took great pride in his family and found his greatest joy in watching his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews grow. His kindness, humility, steadfast work ethic, sense of humor, and unwavering faith left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. He led not through words alone, but through quiet example—showing his family the value of integrity, perseverance, compassion, and service to others.

John was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Anne McGill, and his daughter-in-law, Michelle McGill.

He is lovingly remembered by his sons, Michael McGill and Stephen McGill; Stephen’s wife and his daughter-in-law, Patricia McGill; and his cherished grandchildren, Lauren, Andrew, Matthew, and Colin. He also leaves behind his sister Eilish Gourlay and brother Alec McGill, and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and extended family members, friends, former clients, and fellow parishioners who were blessed by his friendship and example.

A Funeral Mass celebrating John’s life will be held on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 5101 Alton Parkway, Irvine, California 92604. Family and friends are warmly invited to attend and celebrate a life faithfully lived.

John’s legacy is one of quiet strength, enduring faith, selfless service, and unconditional love. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

  6. The loss of our precious brother is so hard. Scotland is so far away but John was never far from our hearts.
The fondest memories of us McGill kids is when we got all dressed up in our Sunday best and got a train to Helensburgh ,for our once a year big day trip . We had high tea in McLaughlins Tea Room, then up to Hermitage Park to play. Such good times, Mum and Dad pulled out all the stops, At that time it was the time of our lives.
John will never be forgotten and we cherish the love and memories we shared.

  7. Frances and Steven Gordon says:

John McGill, a superb big cousin.
We have shared a load of good times. Had many many discussions where we have put the world to rights.Laughed until we cried.
You were my cousin by blood but my friend by choice.
John will always be in my heart.

  8. John was always the same, distance made no difference , we just picked up where we left off. We remember his kindness to us , his generosity, his humour and his elbowing you in the ribs when a story deserved it! We hope you are comforted by the fact that the legacy of his and your mum’s love lives on through your family …. may your memories bring you peace in the challenging days ahead.

  9. Michael & Sunday Connery says:

John was very special to my wife and I. I always enjoyed his sense of humor. We did a lot of laughing whenever we spoke with each other. He loved his family so much… so proud of them. John was a very generous man as well. I remember when I first met him, he about broke my hand with his strong handshake.
We concluded our singing, praying, and sharing at his rest home with that firm handshake. Lots of fun memories boating in LA harbor and Huntington with John, Susanna, Sunday, and myself. Always knew that if I had a problem or a question he could always give some good advice. He was very wise like that.
Definitely miss him here, but we’ll see him again. He’s now in the arms of his loving heavenly Father, and blessed with a new body. Peace and comfort to all his family.
